2026-03-13spl: spi: fix loss of spl_load() error on soft resetDimitrios Siganos
When CONFIG_SPI_FLASH_SOFT_RESET is enabled, spi_nor_remove() is called after spl_load() to switch the flash back to legacy SPI mode. However, the return value of spi_nor_remove() unconditionally overwrites the return value of spl_load(), discarding any load error. Fix this by preserving the spl_load() error and only propagating the spi_nor_remove() error as a fallback. Also log a message when spi_nor_remove() fails, since in the case where spl_load() already failed its error would otherwise be silently discarded. Signed-off-by: Dimitrios Siganos <[email protected]>
2025-10-20spl: make args file optional in falcon modeAnshul Dalal
Falcon mode loads a kernel file and an args file which is the device-tree. However in the case of kernel file being a FIT that contains the device-tree within it, loading the args file is not required. Therefore, this patch introduces a new SPL_OS_BOOT_ARGS config options that allows us to enable or disable loading of the args file in falcon mode. Signed-off-by: Anshul Dalal <[email protected]>
2025-10-20spl: falcon: disable fallback to U-Boot on failureAnshul Dalal
Instead of falling back to the standard U-Boot boot flow, we should just halt boot if the expected boot flow in falcon mode fails. This prevents a malicious actor from accessing U-Boot proper if they can cause a boot failure on falcon mode. Signed-off-by: Anshul Dalal <[email protected]>

2025-09-12spl: spi: fix falcon mode for spi bootAnshul Dalal
spl_start_uboot is a board overridable function that switches to falcon boot mode on return value of 0. Though for SPI, the falcon boot mode was being enabled on return value of 1 which is not the correct behaviour. Therefore this patch fixes it to the expected boot flow. 2023-11-16spl: spi: Consolidate spi_load_image_os into spl_spi_load_imageSean Anderson
spi_load_image_os performs almost the same steps as the non-falcon-boot path of spl_spi_load_image. The load address is different, and it also loads a device tree, but that's it. 2023-11-16spl: Only support bl_len when we have toSean Anderson
Aligning addresses and sizes causes overhead which is unnecessary when we are not loading from block devices. Remove bl_len when it is not needed. For example, on iot2050 we save 144 bytes with this patch (once the rest of this series is applied): add/remove: 0/0 grow/shrink: 0/3 up/down: 0/-144 (-144) Function old new delta spl_load_simple_fit 920 904 -16 load_simple_fit 496 444 -52 spl_spi_load_image 384 308 -76 Total: Before=87431, After=87287, chg -0.16% We use panic() instead of BUILD_BUG_ON in spl_set_bl_len because we still need to be able to compile it for things like mmc_load_image_raw_sector, even if that function will not be used. 2023-11-16spl: Remove filename from spl_load_infoSean Anderson
For filesystems, filename serves the same purpose as priv. However, spl_load_fit_image also uses it to determine whether to use a DMA-aligned buffer. This is beneficial for FAT, which uses a bounce-buffer if the destination is not DMA-aligned. However, this is unnecessary now that filesystems set bl_len to ARCH_DMA_MINALIGN instead. With this done, we can remove filename entirely. Signed-off-by: Sean Anderson <[email protected]> Reviewed-by: Simon Glass <[email protected]>

All "physical" addresses in SPL must be converted to virtual addresses before access in order for sandbox to work. Add some calls to map_sysmem in appropriate places. We do not generally call unmap_sysmem, since we need the image memory to still be mapped when we jump to the image. This doesn't matter at the moment since unmap_sysmem is a no-op. 2023-10-17arm: imx: Check header before calling spl_load_imx_containerSean Anderson
Make sure we have an IMX header before calling spl_load_imx_container, since if we don't it will fail with -ENOENT. This allows us to fall back to legacy/raw images if they are also enabled. This is a functional change, one which likely should have been in place from the start, but a functional change nonetheless. Previously, all non-IMX8 images (except FITs without FIT_FULL) would be optimized out if the only image load method enabled supported IMX8 images. With this change, support for other image types now has an effect. There are seven boards with SPL_LOAD_IMX_CONTAINER enabled: three with SPL_BOOTROM_SUPPORT: imx93_11x11_evk_ld imx93_11x11_evk imx8ulp_evk and four with SPL_MMC: deneb imx8qxp_mek giedi imx8qm_mek All of these boards also have SPL_RAW_IMAGE_SUPPORT and SPL_LEGACY_IMAGE_FORMAT enabled as well. However, none have FIT support enabled. Of the six load methods affected by this patch, only SPL_MMC and SPL_BOOTROM_SUPPORT are enabled with SPL_LOAD_IMX_CONTAINER. spl_romapi_load_image_seekable does not support legacy or raw images, so there is no growth. However, mmc_load_image_raw_sector does support loading legacy/raw images. Since these images could not have been booted before, I have disabled support for legacy/raw images on these four boards. This reduces bloat from around 800 bytes to around 200. There are no in-tree boards with SPL_LOAD_IMX_CONTAINER and AHAB_BOOT both enabled, so we do not need to worry about potentially falling back to legacy images in a secure boot scenario. Future work could include merging imx_container.h with imx8image.h, since they appear to define mostly the same structures. Signed-off-by: Sean Anderson <[email protected]>

2022-07-18spl: spl_spi: add spi_nor_remove() to soft reset flashVaishnav Achath
On probe, the SPI NOR core will put a flash in 8D mode if it supports it. But Linux as of now expects to get the flash in 1S mode. Handing the flash to Linux in Octal DTR mode means the kernel will fail to detect the flash. This commit adds an option to soft reset the flash after spl_spi_load_image() so that the flash can be reset to 1S mode and subsequent spi-nor probe in Linux does not fail, since spl_spi_load_image() performs spi_flash_probe() the remove is added after completion loading images in spi_flash_probe() itself. Tested on J721E EVM with 5.10 Linux kernel. 2021-07-31SPL: Add support for specifying offset between header and imagePali Rohár

2019-04-12dm: spi: Read default speed and mode values from DTPatrick Delaunay
This patch update the behavior introduced by commit 96907c0fe50a ("dm: spi: Read default speed and mode values from DT") In case of DT boot, don't read default speed and mode for SPI from CONFIG_* but instead read from DT node. This will make sure that boards with multiple SPI/QSPI controllers can be probed at different bus frequencies and SPI modes. Remove also use in boards of the value speed=0 (no more supported) for ENV in SPI by using CONFIG_ENV_SPI_MAX_HZ=0. DT values will be always used when available (full DM support of SPI slave with available DT node) even if speed and mode are requested; for example in splash screen support (in splash_sf_read_raw) or in SPL boot (in spl_spi_load_image). The caller of spi_get_bus_and_cs() no more need to force speed=0. But the current behavior don't change if the SPI slave is not present (device with generic driver is created automatically) or if platdata is used (CONFIG_OF_PLATDATA). 2018-09-25spl: Weed out CONFIG_SYS_TEXT_BASE usageMarek Vasut
The SPL loaders assume that the CONFIG_SYS_TEXT_BASE memory location is available and can be corrupted by loading ie. uImage or fitImage headers there. Sometimes it could be beneficial to load the headers elsewhere, ie. if CONFIG_SYS_TEXT_BASE is not yet writable while we still want to parse the image headers in some local onchip memory to ie. extract firmware from that image. Add the possibility to override the location where the headers get loaded by introducing new function, spl_get_load_buffer() which takes two arguments -- offset from the CONFIG_SYS_TEXT_BASE and size of the data that are to be loaded there -- and returns a valid buffer address or hangs the system. The default behavior is the same as before, add the offset to CONFIG_SYS_TEXT_BASE and return that address. User can override the weak spl_get_load_buffer() function though. 2018-05-07SPDX: Convert all of our single license tags to Linux Kernel styleTom Rini
When U-Boot started using SPDX tags we were among the early adopters and there weren't a lot of other examples to borrow from. So we picked the area of the file that usually had a full license text and replaced it with an appropriate SPDX-License-Identifier: entry. Since then, the Linux Kernel has adopted SPDX tags and they place it as the very first line in a file (except where shebangs are used, then it's second line) and with slightly different comment styles than us. In part due to community overlap, in part due to better tag visibility and in part for other minor reasons, switch over to that style. This commit changes all instances where we have a single declared license in the tag as both the before and after are identical in tag contents. There's also a few places where I found we did not have a tag and have introduced one. Signed-off-by: Tom Rini <[email protected]>
